Description

The Greater Washington Community Foundation invites issue area experts from local foundations, think tanks, and government agencies to apply to join us as a pro bono volunteer grant reviewer for the Health Equity Fund. We are looking for approximately thirty (30) individuals to join the grant review committee. Our volunteer grant reviewers review proposals and help us to determine the best proposals to move forward with for funding. We invite you to be part of this exciting process!

For this first funding opportunity, we are particularly interested in identifying individuals who have knowledge and/or experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Health equity
  • Economic mobility

What is the commitment?

  • Must sign a conflict of interest policy prior to review that fully discloses any relationships with organizations that have proposals under review.
  • Must agree to maintain confidentiality about all aspects of the review process and any materials reviewed.
  • Must be able to participate in or review the mandatory training session. A live session will be provided on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

A recording of the live session will be distributed to those who cannot attend.

  • Must agree to review approximately 10-12 grant proposals between August 2 and August 30, 2022. Each application will take roughly 50 minutes to review. Responsibilities include:
    • Reading proposals, scoring the proposals on certain criteria and providing written summaries of the strengths and weaknesses of each proposal; and
    • Actively participating in discussions of the proposals at the grant review meeting and make initial funding recommendations to his/her assigned Grant Review Lead.
  • We strongly encourage reviewers to attend the grant review meeting. There will be two (2) grant review meetings the week of September 5th.
    • Must be able to provide proof of vaccination for in-person convening.

What if I have a conflict of interest?

We realize that many candidates may have a relationship with an organization that plans to apply for funding from The Greater Washington Community Foundation. This will not preclude you from being on the grant review committee. However, you must fully disclose any relationships that you, your spouse, domestic partner or close relative/family member have with organizations that have proposals under review. You will not be assigned to review those proposals and you will be asked to leave the room when the committee discusses those proposals.

Note: If after reviewing an application, you realize that you have a conflict of interest that was not evident from your review of applicant list, please notify Isabel Spake, immediately at ispake@thecommunityfoundation.org.

What are the confidentiality requirements?

The Greater Washington Community Foundation on behalf of the Health Equity Fund will adhere to a strict confidentiality policy in conducting the proposal review process. Applications are the confidential property of Greater Washington Community Foundation and must be discarded and/or returned at the conclusion of this process. Any loss or theft of the applications must be reported immediately to The Community Foundation.

Reviewers are required to keep the content of the applications confidential both prior to and following the grant review process. The names of applicants are to remain confidential.  All discussions with staff or fellow panelists pertaining to the content of applications and the grant review process are to also remain confidential. Reviewers should not contact Health Equity Fund applicants to discuss the content of applications prior to or following the grant review process.
