Volunteer: Become a Power Readers Mentor and Positively Impact a Child's Life through Shared Reading!Hello! Everybody Wins DC (EWDC) is a non-profit organization that is committed to serving elementary students in the DC area. Our goal is to help children build the literacy and social-emotional skills needed to thrive in the classroom and in life. One way we do this is through our Power Readers program, where we facilitate weekly one-on-one mentoring sessions between our students and caring members of the community. The beauty of our program is the lack of curriculum – our mentors do not teach students to read; they simply provide a safe and judgement-free space for students to practice reading and nurture their love for books. We are currently looking for volunteers to act as Power Readers mentors during the 2026-27 school year. As a Power Readers mentor, you would be matched with an elementary student between 1st and 5th grade, who you would read with for the entirety of the academic school year (October 2026 – May 2027). You will have a scheduled day of the week to physically volunteer and read with that student at their school, get to know them, and mentor/encourage them through their reading journey. Sessions are one hour long and occur during the student’s lunch and recess hour (sometime between the hours of 10am – 2pm). Then we give them the tools to do something about it. As a mentor, you’ll serve as a sounding board and thought partner for students designing social change ventures—sharing your insights, offering encouragement, and helping them bring their ideas to life. Our staff lead the sessions, we’ll train you in the LearnServe method, and we offer multiple tracks to fit your schedule. Students often say that working with mentors is a highlight of their LearnServe experience—and mentors tell us it’s one of the most meaningful ways they give back.
