Opportunities From: Serve DC

Volunteer: Deliver Food Donation in Chinatown on Mondays

We're looking for volunteers to deliver food donations! For this opportunity, you'll use your own car to pick up surplus food from a law firm in Chinatown and deliver it to a low-income housing development just down the road.

We need volunteers to deliver these donations on Mondays, between 10:00am and 1:00pmFrom start to finish, this process should take about half an hour, so you can go anytime within the timeframe. It's a quick and simple way to save food that would otherwise go to waste, while supporting our neighbors experiencing food insecurity.

Interested in helping fight food waste? Click here to register as a Food Rescue US - DC volunteer to sign up for this and other opportunities in the Food Rescue US app. You build your own schedule and don't have to make a weekly commitment if it doesn't work for you!

If you have any questions, please email our Site Coordinator Eva at eva@foodrescue.us.

Volunteer: Data Wizard!

We Need a Data Wizard!
Help us keep track of the awesome people we serve.

The DMV Music Alliance is on the hunt for a Data Architecture Volunteer to help us build a smart, simple, and sustainable system to track who we’re helping—so we can help even more! You’ll design a way for us to organize and visualize our impact, making our mission clearer and our work smarter.

What You’ll Do:

Create a system (CRM, spreadsheet, database—you choose!) to track individuals we support.

Collaborate with team leads to understand data needs and build user-friendly solutions.

Ensure data is secure, organized, and easy to update.

Make insights easy to see and share!

Requirements:

Experience with data systems, CRM platforms, or basic database design.

Passion for clean, useful, and accessible data.

Must be able to attend meetings in Eastern Time (remote role, open worldwide).

Bonus if you love music (but we’ll help you find the rhythm!).

About DMV Music Alliance:
We're a nonprofit powering the music scene in DC, Maryland & Virginia by supporting local artists, events, and industry professionals. Whether it’s a concert, workshop, or community project—we believe music brings people together, and we want to do more of it, better.

Volunteer: Listen to Youth Advocacy with Washington Urban Debate

Washington Urban Debate League (WUDL) supports, sustains, and starts new debate programs at public middle and high schools in the greater Washington area, especially at Title 1 schools. We work with more than 80 schools across the D.C. area, host the local tournament schedule, providing curriculum and resources to schools and students, host a summer program, and are other-wise a one-stop shop for debate in the region. We've won numerous awards across the last ten years, including from the Spur Local as "one of the best" local nonprofits), the National Association of Urban Debate Leagues (Most Outstanding League), and are the reigning UDL Middle School National Champions (6 years in a row(!)

Why Debate?

Peer reviewed research shows that debate is one of the best things that a student can do with their time to compliment their traditional education. Debate improves test scores and grades, graduation and college attendance, social-emotional growth, literacy, and civic engagement. Before the WUDL, debate programs were few and far between at public schools, especially in Title 1 Schools, existing only at elite private or suburban schools. Our programming makes a great educational opportunity available to students who haven't traditionally had access to it.

Our Program: Volunteers attend Saturday tournaments to listen and provide feedback on youth advocacy. Their feedback drives practices for months afterwards. Tournaments occur once a month, and rotate around the city so nobody has to travel too far all the time.

Volunteer: Share Knowledge, Connections, and Resources with Students on the Social Platform for Social Mobility

Only 3% of high-performing, under-resourced students end up in a great first career experience. On our social platform, professionals like you can help change that.

Here's how:

1. Sign up via your computer at my.backrs.com or by downloading the Backrs mobile app from the Apple App or Google Play Stores.

2. Tell us a little about your background and experiences by completing your profile. This takes 5 mins. (Up to 15 if you'd like to give students more details about your hobbies and interests.)

3. We add you to identity-based, regional, university, and career-path Affinity Networks where you can connect with students you're well-positioned to support.

4. In Networks, you can answer students' questions, post resources or job/internship opportunities, and share insights into your college and career journey by responding to Backstage Pass posts. Though each of these actions takes a few minutes, they all have meaningful impacts on young people.

5. If you'd like to play a more involved role in a student's journey, you can join their panel of backrs. This enables you to view their goals, post on their personal feed, schedule Zoom check-ins, and even contribute to their Flourish Fund. It's a great choice for those looking to offer low-lift, relationship-driven support.

Best way to see how convenient and rewarding being a backr really is? Give it a try, commitment-free:

Sign up on your computer: my.backrs.com

Or get the Backrs mobile app: Apple App Store or Google Play Store

Volunteer: Virtual Volunteer Reading Partner

Reading Partners needs volunteers like you to provide students in under-resourced elementary schools in your community with the proven, individualized reading support they need to read at grade level by fourth grade.

Reading is the foundation for all future learning. The ability to read transforms lives and can empower children to reach their full potential. Research shows that when students can read at grade level by fourth grade, they have a greater opportunity to succeed in school and in life.

With your help, we can equip students with the foundational skills they need to read at grade level. Each week, you will meet one-on-one with your student over Zoom to help them develop strong literacy skills and discover a passion for reading. We'll provide a structured curriculum, virtual training, and ongoing support to help your student thrive. Rigorous research has proven that Reading Partners significantly increases reading proficiency.

No teaching experience required and anyone over the age of 18 can volunteer. Flexible Monday to Thursday volunteer times between 9 am and 6 pm. We are currently recruiting for the 2021-22 school year.

Volunteer: Be the Voice of a Child! Become a Court Appointed Special Advocate Today!

Court Appointed Special Advocates are volunteers trained to speak up for court-involved youth in the District of Columbia. CASA volunteers are appointed by a judge to represent the best interests of foster youth or juvenile justice-involved youth based on a unique and supportive relationship.

Working with only one child or family, CASA volunteers form a mentor-like relationship with a youth, engaging them in fun activities and supporting goal accomplishment, while gathering information about each child’s situation. As Court Appointed Special Advocates, volunteers submit reports to the court, make recommendations in the best interest of the child, and provide the court with valuable insight into the youth’s life. CASAs dedicate a minimum of 10-15 hours per month to their case for at least a year.

In addition to its Standard program, serving youth who have experienced abuse or neglect, CASA DC has 5 unique programs to support youth in special populations:

BRIDGES, which serves youth involved in the juvenile justice system; EMPOWER, which supports youth survivors of trafficking and sexual violence; Family Treatment Court, which supports reunifying families struggling with substance abuse; MAP, serving immigrant and first-generation youth; and Preparing Youth for Adulthood, which empowers transitioning youth towards a successful adulthood.

All CASA volunteers form a supportive one-on-one relationship with youth and provide individualized advocacy, but each program offers unique opportunities for engagement and impact.
