Volunteer: Biomedical Services: Blood Donor Ambassador
Purpose
This position supports the Regional Biomedical Services department. This opportunity requires participation in in-person activities and/or performing work in a Red Cross facility. The purpose of the Blood Donor Ambassador is to provide excellent and enthusiastic customer service to enhance the blood donor experience. Engage with blood donors to promote blood donation and set the stage for a long-term commitment to regular blood donations. Assist donors with re-hydrating after donation and observe for post-donation reactions. Express gratitude and ensure each blood donor is sincerely thanked for their donation.
Responsibilities
Overview of Mobile Blood Drives Usually hosted at a community or sponsor-owned location Blood collection procedures are whole blood and red cell (no platelets or plasma) ‘Mobile’ blood drives change almost every day—with the need to setup and takedown each blood drive, they tend to be faster paced, in a variety of sites, with different donors, sponsors, team members, and chargeperson each drive Often requires careful maintenance of donor flow and wait times (typically more donors on the schedule) Events confirmed about 6 weeks in advanceOverview of Fixed Sites Usually hosted at a community or sponsor-owned location Blood collection procedures are whole blood and red cell (no platelets or plasma) Staff and equipment tend to be ‘ready to go’ in the same site each day--with fewer donors participating on a frequent basis in longer term procedures (some procedures take as long as 2-2.5 hours per donor) at a Red Cross donor center. Similar or same: list of donors, team members and charge people from week to week creates sense of team Regular donors become familiar with check-in process, materials and site Schedule rarely changes, available several months in advance, a weekly shift ‘adoption’ is highly encouraged. For example – one shift every Tuesday morning or afternoon
All Donor Ambassador roles (Mobile Blood Drives and Fixed Sites) Support Red Cross staff by being helpful, flexible, and patient Greet donors, explain the donation process as necessary and assist with initial intake and hand offs through the blood donation process Manage donor flow and direct donors to Check-In Model excellent customer service behaviors. Ensure blood donors have relevant information and that questions are answered appropriately while creating a favorable impression of the blood donation process.

Volunteer: Disaster Services- Train to Deploy to a Future Local or National Disaster (With Professional License)
It's important to ensure we are pre-trained to help when disaster strikes. Preparedness is key! The more trained/prepared we are when, for example, a hurricane strikes, the more efficient we are to help those in need. This position indicates you might not be ready to volunteer, but you are ready to train to volunteer for future operations. Training must be completed within 4 weeks and is self-paced. Local large-scale disaster operations do not require a long-term commitment, but deploying to a disaster away from home requires 10 consecutive days of availability if you are a licensed mental health or health services provider, assisting with physical and mental health needs. Licenses include RN, MD, LPN, NP, LCSW, among others. Organization: American Red Cross National Capital & Greater Chesapeake Region

Volunteer: Coach Debate at local public schools!Washington Urban Debate League (WUDL) supports, sustains, and starts new debate programs at public middle and high schools in the greater Washington area, especially at Title 1 schools. We work with more than 80 schools across the D.C. area, host the local tournament schedule, providing curriculum and resources to schools and students, host a summer program, and are other-wise a one-stop shop for debate in the region. We've won numerous awards across the last ten years, including from the Spur Local as "one of the best" local nonprofits), the National Association of Urban Debate Leagues (Most Outstanding League), and are the reigning UDL Middle School National Champions (6 years in a row(!) Why Debate? Peer reviewed research shows that debate is one of the best things that a student can do with their time to compliment their traditional education. Debate improves test scores and grades, graduation and college attendance, social-emotional growth, literacy, and civic engagement. Before the WUDL, debate programs were few and far between at public schools, especially in Title 1 Schools, existing only at elite private or suburban schools. Our programming makes a great educational opportunity available to students who haven't traditionally had access to it. Our Program: Volunteers partner with school based coaches to run local teams, meeting with students at least once a week. We are looking for folks able to work with a local school in the mid-late afternoons, many meeting times are still TBD with the start of the school year. The ideal coach could attend Saturday tournaments with their kids, but this IS NOT a requirement.
