Volunteer: Listen to Youth Advocacy with Washington Urban Debate

Washington Urban Debate League (WUDL) supports, sustains, and starts new debate programs at public middle and high schools in the greater Washington area, especially at Title 1 schools. We work with more than 80 schools across the D.C. area, host the local tournament schedule, providing curriculum and resources to schools and students, host a summer program, and are other-wise a one-stop shop for debate in the region. We've won numerous awards across the last ten years, including from the Spur Local as "one of the best" local nonprofits), the National Association of Urban Debate Leagues (Most Outstanding League), and are the reigning UDL Middle School National Champions (6 years in a row(!)

Why Debate?

Peer reviewed research shows that debate is one of the best things that a student can do with their time to compliment their traditional education. Debate improves test scores and grades, graduation and college attendance, social-emotional growth, literacy, and civic engagement. Before the WUDL, debate programs were few and far between at public schools, especially in Title 1 Schools, existing only at elite private or suburban schools. Our programming makes a great educational opportunity available to students who haven't traditionally had access to it.

Our Program: Volunteers attend Saturday tournaments to listen and provide feedback on youth advocacy. Their feedback drives practices for months afterwards. Tournaments occur once a month, and rotate around the city so nobody has to travel too far all the time.

Volunteer: Volunteer Families Needed for Roots of Empathy

ROOTS OF EMPATHY PROGRAM-CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

A few DCPS and Private Schools are looking for local families with a baby that will be 2-4 months in September/October/November to volunteer for the Roots of Empathy program. If you'd like to hear from a family who volunteered last year, just let me know! I'd be happy to connect you with some!

Roots of Empathy is seeking volunteer families in the DC community! Roots of Empathy is a school-based program that nurtures empathy through a baby-led approach. At Roots of Empathy, the families and the babies are the heartbeat of all that our program does. Guided by a certified instructor and relevant curriculum, children learn to recognize emotions in both the baby and themselves. This fosters a sense of shared vulnerability and common emotions, encouraging inclusivity and acceptance. Since 1996, Roots of Empathy has operated on four continents, impacting 1 million children across various languages.    If you or someone you know in the community would be interested, please contact me, ashoemaker@.... You can also fill out the form at this link.   To see what Roots of Empathy teaches and how families and babies help, check out DCPS’s Maury Elementary School on the Today show doing Roots of Empathy and be heart-warmed! https://www.today.com/video/how-baby-teachers-in-classrooms-are-teaching-older-kids-empathy-71468101773

Volunteer: Share Knowledge, Connections, and Resources with Students on the Social Platform for Social Mobility

Only 3% of high-performing, under-resourced students end up in a great first career experience. On our social platform, professionals like you can help change that.

Here's how:

1. Sign up via your computer at my.backrs.com or by downloading the Backrs mobile app from the Apple App or Google Play Stores.

2. Tell us a little about your background and experiences by completing your profile. This takes 5 mins. (Up to 15 if you'd like to give students more details about your hobbies and interests.)

3. We add you to identity-based, regional, university, and career-path Affinity Networks where you can connect with students you're well-positioned to support.

4. In Networks, you can answer students' questions, post resources or job/internship opportunities, and share insights into your college and career journey by responding to Backstage Pass posts. Though each of these actions takes a few minutes, they all have meaningful impacts on young people.

5. If you'd like to play a more involved role in a student's journey, you can join their panel of backrs. This enables you to view their goals, post on their personal feed, schedule Zoom check-ins, and even contribute to their Flourish Fund. It's a great choice for those looking to offer low-lift, relationship-driven support.

Best way to see how convenient and rewarding being a backr really is? Give it a try, commitment-free:

Sign up on your computer: my.backrs.com

Or get the Backrs mobile app: Apple App Store or Google Play Store
